From the very moment a newborn baby enters into the world, they begin to use their senses to explore their new environment.
Early childhood educators cannot overstate the importance of sensory play in the educational process as it’s the foundation of all the skills children will use in school learning to read, write and solve math and science problems. Once a child has these experiences, they are able to draw upon the body memory and cognitive memory of their experiences when faced with new situations. Further, the process of observation is a skill in and of itself.
By providing children growing up with materials that they can physically manipulate, play with and explore, parents/carers help them learn more about the world and develop crucial skills that they will utilize later in life
Hands on play also offers many physical benefits, allowing your children to develop an awareness of their body and personal space whilst strengthening their muscle control.Β
Babies and toddlers put just about everything they see into their mouths – this is just one way a child will use their senses to gain new information and engage with their surroundings!
Sensory/Messy play is any activity that stimulates the five senses of touch, taste, sound, sight and smell as well as the rather less known senses balance (vestibular) and a sense of where each body part is in relation to the rest (proprioception).
In addition to this is allows children the freedom to choose materials and develop their imagination. It can also aid language and communication as a child explains what something may feel like or how it tastes or smells!
Fine motor skillΒ (orΒ dexterity) is the coordination of small muscles, in movementsβusually involving the synchronisation of hands and fingersβwith the eyes. The complex levels of manual dexterity that humans exhibit can be attributed to and demonstrated in tasks controlled by theΒ nervous system. FineΒ motor skillsΒ aid in the growth of intelligence and develop continuously throughout theΒ stages of human development.
Five reasons summarised:
- Experimentation skills and recognition of the sense used during the exploration of different items.
- Attention and concentration by focusing on the given stimuli, such as exploring a slime in a bowl or torches with coloured paper.
- Increased hand/eye co-ordination and both gross and fine motor skills.
- Life skillsΒ is a fancy way of saying ‘the skills your child will need throughout their life’ such as, scooping, moving, tipping AKA motor hand movements.
- Tactile learning – the foundation of sensory play is play with our senses aka tactile learning.

With messy play, the sensory experience also helps children to understand their senses.
By exploring how things feel, smell and taste, this type of play nurtures an awareness and understanding of the world that surrounds them – even if you hate it – while my children had finished with the slime I had to clean up the mess of it being flung out the bath!
There is no right way to carry out messy play as it’s all about letting children explore and experiment with different objects and raw materials without any end goals to restrict them.
With raw materials such as slime, water, chalk, paint, play dough or paste, childrenβs imaginations can run wild and they can spend a long time exploring these, making their own discoveries, stimulating their curiosity and developing their knowledge.Β
Activities such as pouring, shovelling, throwing or dancing in the slime it can help build strength in the large muscle groups at the top of the arms and it is these muscles that then enable the smaller muscles in the hands and fingers to make precise and controlled movements.
In messy play, children can play with tools to develop and practice their fine motor skills as well as their hand-eye coordination, until soon they can hold a pen or eat with a fork!

Slime baff turns bath water into oozy, gooey bath of slime and it does what it says on the tin! It offers imaginative and creative play.
In regards to using the products it’s very simple to use as you fill up the bath – my children poured in the slime and stirred with it their hands and it took around five minutes for it to thicken up to look like slime – then in go the children and they totally loved it!
10/10 would recommend.
