Lottie Dolls – Toys for all genders.

ABOUT

These fabulous dolls were launched August 2012 and based on the average proportions of a nine-year-old child rather than those of an adult woman they are promoting body positivity.

Based in Donegal, on the North-West coast of Ireland, Team Lottie is made up of people who are passionate about preserving the magic of childhood.

Lottie Dolls celebrate childhood and promote the empowerment of children by encouraging kids:

  • To be themselves
  • To play – imaginatively and adventurously
  • To have fun!
  • To refuse to be put into boxes
  • To not wait until they’re grown up, to change the world

They want to encourage all children regardless of gender, ability or ethnicity to follow all their dreams. “Business impacts children. And therefore, we must let children impact business.”

Available to buy are Playsets, pets, Books, horses, outfits and buildings.

They are all about supporting:

Childhood

Empowerment

Diversity & Inclusion

STEM Education

Sustainability

They were intrigued to hear about our country’s 180-point plan – involving institutions, companies and individuals – to tackle the climate emergency by curbing greenhouse gases and moving towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The Lottie family say “I buy as little plastic as possible. Over half (my child’s) toys are wooden and we are trying to reduce single-use plastic. We have a lot of wooden toys. We love the Lottie tree house!”

WHAT MY KIDS THOUGHT

They love them!

Lottie Dolls are 7 inches (18cm) tall, very portable and easy for little hands to carry around.

From opening up the boxes you could see they were well made with lots of intricate details.

The horse my son loved as he really loves animals. My eldest is a Cub so receiving a brownie outfit along with the Canoe set she was so happy to be able to play with and as it’s recommended for ages 3 and up has the hand co-ordination skills to undress and change clothes.

The Kid Activist is the favourite as she has promotes ‘Kids Lives Matter’ plus has amazing curly hair. My infant is mixed race Jamaican and the doll is black so is pretty cool she has a toy that can show different race.

MY THOUGHTS

I love how they are different ethnicity – with having two of my children who are of mixed origin it’s nice to be able to get dolls that aren’t ‘just white’ as it’s important to show children that we all come from different backgrounds.

The boxes are fantastic designs from the details on the packaging to even the doll outfits – you can see everything has been thought on in regards to design to just what the toys represent.

The dolls are ball jointed with bendable knees so easy to pose for imaginative play and Phthalate free vinyl plastic, super soft feel!

WHY GENDER ‘FLUID’ TOYS ARE IMPORTANT

Having toys available and advertised for both genders to play with breaks the stereotype ‘dolls are for girls’ which in today’s society is very important.

As the dolls themselves are designed with neutral body shapes it also means that parents or carers don’t have to worry about dolls being sexualised or sexuality –  essentially delivered to children as a blank canvas, with an ungendered body type.

It’s a great example of how actually creating an ungendered and neutral toy doesn’t have to be the mind blowing drama its conservative critics would like you to think it is.

This prospect of children just being allowed to play with toys that aren’t gendered isn’t only reassuring for children who are questioning or experimenting with their gender identity, but also for children who aren’t.

According to Healthychildren.org “Gender identity typically develops in stages: Around age two: Children become conscious of the physical differences between boys and girls. Before their third birthday: Most children can easily label themselves as either a boy or a girl. By age four: Most children have a stable sense of their gender identity.18 Sep 2018.

These dolls means children can be Gender creative and express their gender differently from what society may expect. For example, a boy who loves to wear pink or a girl who insists on wearing her hair very short might be considered “gender-creative”.

Society’s expectations for gender constantly change and vary in different cultures and at different times in history and when it comes to buying gifts for children, everything in the past has been is colour coded with rigid boundaries, such as, segregate brawny blue action figures from pretty pink Princesses – thankfully – toys out there now are getting past that!

The Lottie dolls were gifted but viewpoints are my own.
