Below are some diary entries from his Tapestry – there were photos of Oscar and other children which of course I wouldn’t upload for privacy reasons.
First trip to the library

They sang Autumn songs from memory in their music session today. They used their ears to detect the different sounds and we were challenged to pass the percussion instrument all the way round the circle without making a sound!

They used their sense of smell and passed smelly pots around the circle, describing what our noses could smell and guessing what could be inside the pots. The children had a lovely time and suggested some wonderful ideas!

They became measuring detectives! Each child had one minute to find something taller than the ruler and something shorter than the ruler. They then sat in a circle and told their friends the things they had found.
Fabulous fun in P.E. today

They visited a magical garden today, can your child remember the different styles creatures they pretended to be. Their teacher took around the running track which everyone enjoyed.

Story of the Week

That week’s story was ‘The Little Red Hen’. In inference they talked all about how the characters feel in the story. They acted out the tale and can tell the story orally. Later this week they worked together to make bread.

This week they were talking about why some people in Britain and around the world choose to celebrate Harvest and Sukkot. They used their senses to investigate the seasonal fruit and vegetables. On Friday we will walk to St. James to church for a Harvest Festival Service.

Ros Canter a double gold medal winner for Britain came into assembly today. Ros is in the eventing team for Great Britain. She has been riding horses since she was a little girl that came to Kidgate Primary and she showed everyone her gold medals and spoke about how hard she has had to work to earn her gold medals.

They baked bread liked the Little Red Hen in our story of the week and mixed the ingredients to make dough. They kneaded the dough with their knuckles and then left the bread to prove. Once the yeast had worked its magic, they then put their rolls in the oven to bake.

They were inspired by the work of the famous artist ‘Arcimboldo’ and worked together harmoniously in small groups to create their own artwork.

They had a super time learning outdoors and shared their story of the week Pumpkin Soup, ate their own delicious soup and got busy building a house for the cat, squirrel and duck from the story. The children worked together in groups, listening to each other’s ideas and creating some wonderful houses.

They were very excited that afternoon and was using the sounds they know to start to read their very first ditty book. We will keep building on this skill in school and very soon the children will bring their ditty book home to share with you. Great blending everyone!

Making 6 and 7

They were exploring addition in maths and first looked at how many ways they could make number 7 as a group. The children then worked with their partner to see how many ways they could make the number 6 and even had a go at writing some number sentences. What a busy morning!

That week they have been talking about why some people choose to celebrate Diwali. The boys and girls retold the story of Rama and Sita in PE today. The girls pretending to be Sita, lighting lamps to guide the way home whilst the boys pretending to be the demon king blowing out the lamps and bringing the darkness – this was turning the cones over and the children had lots of fun. They then acted out cleaning their house in preparation for the Diwali celebrations and finished by learning some Indian dancing.

They had been exploring addition in maths that week and had a go at ‘proving it’. The children were given an addition such as 4+2=6 and 7+3=10. They then had to choose a way to show that this is correct. Some children gathered cubes to show their working out, some used Numicon and some children drew dots on their whiteboards. We then finished with a challenge where each pair was given a number and had to find two numbers that add together to make that total!
A visit from Sunita

They learnt all about why some people choose to celebrate Diwali the Festival of Lights. Sunita visited and told us the story of Rama and Sita and listened to some Indian music and looked at some of the special things that help Sunita celebrate the festival in her home.
5 currant buns

They explored money in maths this week and sang 5 current buns in a bakers shop, one of their nursery rhymes this week. Then explored how many pennies make up different amounts.

In maths they made a shopping list and worked out how much each item would cost and then had to make sure we had enough money in their purse to go to the shops. Finished our maths session with the coin number fans – the children were fantastic at finding the right coin on the fan and holding it up!

They used 2p and 1p coins to work out some money number sentences and did a great job! Also practised writing numbers 0-10.

They explored weight in maths and spoke about objects being heavy and light and how we can use some balance scales to compare the weight of two items. We set ourselves a challenge – the girls had to find objects lighter than the pumpkin and the boys had to find something heavier than the pom-poms.

Their party day in Reception and had a very special visitor who came with a present for all of the girls and boys. They also enjoyed playing musical statues round the Christmas tree and ‘Santa’s on the roof’. Back in the classroom there was a lovely party snack with friends and shared a magical story together. What a brilliant day!

They loved getting back to their maths this week! The children started by writing numbers as high as they can… What a fantastic job they did and they then played car park addition and the children added two single digit numbers together by adding cars to the car park and finding the total.
Bedtime story session

What a wonderful afternoon they had at their learning launch as they read some fascinating books, made up their own stories and explored different ways to enjoy books together. A great way to launch our topic ‘While you were sleeping’. They were excited to find out all about what happens at night while we are asleep.

They had a visit today from Hedgehog Care who brought Serena the hedgehog to meet us. The children asked lots of wonderful questions and learnt some facts about hedgehogs. Lots of people donated towards the hamper, it will help Hedgehog Care continue to look after hedgehogs like Serena. Some of the children wrote thank you cards and coloured pictures to say thank you too!

They went to their outdoor classroom that afternoon to look for signs of hedgehogs visiting and spotted a hedgehog house where they thought one could live and also did a mini beast hunt to see if there was enough food for hedgehogs. A lovely afternoon!
Signs of winter

They enjoyed exploring signs of winter outside this morning. The children made patterns in the ice using their feet and described what they could see. It was very exciting!
Music music music…
What a wonderful music session they had – first they played a listening game ‘Pirates Treasure’ and then the children sang and danced to their winter songs. To finish they continued their learning of patterns in maths by making patterns using musical instruments to create patterns.

They joined the year 2 boys and girls for PE that morning and enjoyed a circuit of different activities. The children had a wonderful time running, jumping, throwing and hurdling!

Shrove Tuesday pancake making

They talked about why it is that some people choose to celebrate Shrove Tuesday and their teacher showed all how to make a pancake and spoke about the ingredients and followed the instructions. They chose the toppings but most of all they enjoyed watching their teacher toss the pancake!

Farmer Joe had been to see them with a very special delivery. EYFS had got ten eggs to look after in their incubator and they kept the eggs safe and warm for 21 days then they will have a very special arrival of some chicks hatching out of the eggs.
World Book Day

They dressed in pyjamas for World Book Day today. The children enjoyed sharing stories together in the afternoon and in the morning they acted out the story of a Squash and a Squeeze with their friends, repeating the refrains from the story. What a wonderful way to celebrate books and a love of reading!

On Friday they launched their ‘Down on the Farm’ project with a visit to Rand Farm Park. The children had a wonderful time seeing all the animals and learning about farming plus they saw lambs being born, fed the animals, had a ride on a tractor and asked lots of questions along the way. A wonderful day!
Science week 2019

What a super time they had celebrating British Science Week 2019. The children enjoyed investigating materials through making bridges strong enough to hold the goat and turning a liquid to a solid making butter! Everyone had a great time learning and experimenting. It was lovely to see so many grown ups come to support them.

The teacher brought in some tulips to do a colour changing experiment with and had put different coloured food colouring into each of the jugs of water. The children predicted that on Monday when they get back to school the tulips petals will have changed to the colour of the water.

Part of their home challenge this week was to use a tally chart. They had a practise at this and the children had to come and put their tally mark next to their choice. They then ordered the numbers and worked out which type of egg the children liked most. And they know that tally marks make groups of 5.
Rhubarb Theatre Company

They had a lovely treat this morning, watching a production by the Rhubarb Theatre Company. The children sat beautifully listening to the story and even thought of some questions to ask the actors at the end.
School run with siblings
Of course this was from day one to the end – his big sister was so happy that Oscar had joined her at big school and loved being able to walk to school with him everyday plus see him in his classroom. He got his 100% attendance certificate like she did plus worker of the week and their certificates are stuck on the door together!

We had a visit from Rand Farm today to check on our eggs. We have been looking after them for two weeks now and it is only 7 days until our eggs will hatch. We have 9 chicks growing inside our eggs in our incubator. I wonder if the children can tell you how to check if there are chicks inside the eggs?

Our eggs have started to hatch here in Reception and they already have 6 fluffy chicks to look after. The children have been so excited, observing them closely and suggesting names. Don’t forget to follow the instructions for the live feed of our chicks on YouTube. How exciting!!

The children were challenged today to make a basket in the construction area. The basket had to have a handle and it had to be able to carry the eggs from Farmer Joe’s farm. What brilliant designs!
They went out to play the hailstones fell. The children were so excited watching them bounce on the floor and collecting them in tubs as they fell from the sky. They brought some hailstones inside to explore and talk about. What good fun!

When they arrived back in their classroom this morning there was a big mess and some bunny footprints… The Easter bunny had left them a letter and told them to follow the clues. They had so much fun finding them around the school and it lead us back to the classroom where the Easter bunny had left chocolate eggs on top of the nest cakes we had made yesterday! What a wonderful surprise.

Will ‘the bee man’ visited – he showed a hive that he uses to keep his bees and then a hive that would have been used long ago. He showed us some honeycomb and we all tasted different coloured honeys which have different tastes because they come from different flowers. They asked him questions and found out lots of fascinating facts!

Worms and caterpillars

They had their own caterpillars, which they closely kept an eye on – soon they will make a chrysalis and they will hang them in the butterfly net and wait for them to turn into beautiful butterflies and they will then set them free into our school garden. They have also created a wormery and the children have collected worms from the school garden. It is fascinating watching them dig through the layers and wriggle around the soil.

In their story of the week ‘What the Ladybird Heard Next’ the animals make up an imaginary bird called a Snuggly Snerd. This morning the children worked in pairs to design their own imaginative bird. They made the most wonderful designs of birds of all colours, shapes, and sizes – some even laid chocolate eggs!

They had a wonderful trip to Louth Tennis Centre. The children had a great time playing games and joining in with different activities. Their behaviour and listening skills were super and they followed instructions working alone and as a team. They learnt some great new skills and they can’t wait for their next PE session now to continue the fun!

The children enjoyed developing their skills with a competitive edge. The Tennis Coaches were impressed with their behaviour and determination. Another proud EYFS moment but we do need to practice our bouncing and catching skills.

They spoke about jellyfish and learnt that the largest jellyfish ever to be seen had tentacles 27 metres long! They measured this out on the playground and each drew a tentacle 27 metres long.

Music of the sea

That morning in music they listened to the sound of the sea. They used musical instruments to make their own sea sound and got louder and louder and louder until they made a sound of a storm in the sea! They know this is called a crescendo and listened to the noises that whales and dolphins make and tried to make the sound ourselves!

Their measuring challenge table is all set up! You can find some objects to measure at home and use all sorts of different things to measure with… cubes, rulers, your hands, pieces of string etc.

Ahoy there! What a busy morning on deck. After reading their core text ‘How I Became a Pirate’ they soon got busy exploring their pirate ship, writing messages in bottles and designing flags and treasure maps.

They all went to the tennis centre today and to add the the children’s excitement they travelled by a DOUBLE DECKER BUS!

They had a marvellous time at The Deep and saw all sorts of sea creatures, took a ride in the lift through the shark tank, touched the ice wall and enjoyed a fun workshop where they learnt all about divers.

They had a brilliant six weeks building on their tennis skills and that day had their final tennis session. The children have made giant strides in their ability to throw, catch, bounce, work co-operatively and use a tennis racket. Brilliant hand eye co-ordination, brilliant listening and a brilliant term.

EYFS had a wash house outside. They learnt how their uniform would have been washed in the past. It was hard work and they were very grumpy!
